Hello,
Two week ago I went to the exhibition of Valentino, Master of Couture, with some friends at Somerset House in London. The exhibition is divided into 3 sections. It starts with a collection of Valentino's private archive: thank-you notes from celebrities, royal families and colleague fashion designers, articles in newspapers and fashion magazines such as Vogue and sketches of some of his designs. I have to say that I was most inspired and fascinated by his sketches.

The second section is a collection of his haute couture dresses worn by famous people such as Grace Kelly, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sophia Loren and many more. The room is like a runway. On both sides of the catwalk dresses are shown on mannequin dolls with white chairs. Some models are sitting down others were standing. Some gowns are showing the front of the dress, others are showing the back. You are so near to the dresses that you can almost touch them. Every detail is visible. Much time and thought went into these designs. Some dresses are older but they still look really modern. The fabrics are rich of colour and beautifully tailored with beads and sequins. I expected more to see of his famous red dresses, but who is complaining. :)

Last but not least we are shown the beautifully hand made wedding dress of Princess Marie Chantal of Greece. This dress is made out of 15 different kinds of lace, all tailored by hand. In addition to this stunning wedding dress, videos and examples of the work and tailoring of his designs are displayed. The beading, sewing, knitting,… I'm not a fashion designer but I do understand now why he is called the "master of couture". Every angle of his dresses are perfectly made and tailored. They suit his clients perfectly and the dresses are timeless. A piece of art.
